The Arctic Commons and US Power Projection
This article discusses the Arctic and the looming security concerns the U.S. will face with an increasingly accessible Arctic Commons. As this region becomes accessible, so too will the U.S.’s vulnerabilities in the region become increasingly acute. Competitors in the form of Russia and China each have their own designs on securing these burgeoning maritime routes of the Northern Sea Route and Polar Silk Road. However, despite being an Arctic nation, the U.S.’s presence and ability to deter the Arctic from becoming increasingly militarized is insufficient. Across U.S. Arctic policy, military activity in the region, and the Unified Command Plan, this informational article examines the past and present and calls for securing the future.
